CLIMATE ACTION FOR PEACE: TACKLING CONFLICT AND EXTREMISM PVE IN THE CLIMATE AND PEACE NEXUS
The link between climate change and conflict is becoming increasingly evident in Somalia. In Dhobley and Hosingow, communities face rising tensions over diminishing water sources, pasturelands, and other natural resources. These conflicts often create fertile ground for recruitment into extremist groups. USDI is addressing this by integrating climate resilience and peacebuilding strategies into local governance structures.
Project Objectives:
- Strengthen local capacity to manage climate-related conflicts.
- Reduce vulnerabilities that contribute to extremist recruitment.
- Promote community-driven climate adaptation solutions.
Key Activities:
- Capacity Building for Peace Committees
USDI is training Peace Committees on conflict resolution, mediation techniques, and resource management strategies to help mitigate disputes before they escalate.
- Early Warning and Response Mechanisms
Through community-based monitoring systems, USDI is helping local leaders identify potential climate-related conflict triggers and take proactive measures to address them.
- Climate Adaptation Strategies
USDI is promoting reforestation, soil conservation, and sustainable land use practices to reduce the strain on dwindling natural resources and prevent climate-related conflicts.
By linking climate action to peacebuilding, this initiative fosters long-term stability and resilience in conflict-prone areas.
